Chapter 16: every tradition · Christianity

American Baptist Churches USA

A congregation of American Baptist Churches USA, the mainline Baptist body descended from the Northern Baptist Convention and among the most racially diverse in American Protestantism. Each church is the basic unit of mission: it owns its building, calls its own pastor with help from its region's executive minister, recites no creed, and sets its own worship, teaching, and practice. Believers are baptized by full immersion and the Lord's Supper shared monthly at an open table. Women have been ordained since 1882 and serve as pastors and regional leaders. Churches give voluntarily through United Mission and four annual offerings. Same-sex marriage is a local and contested question: national policy is traditional, but some churches publicly welcome and affirm. Congregations differ widely: a reserved New England or Midwestern service with organ and choir, or a Black Baptist church's expressive worship, which is its own variant here.

Every item, for this tradition

Fit runs from −1 (jars) to +1 (just right); the building fit is the average over the characterful items in the worship rooms. An item with no character (a table, a toilet) has no fit. A rule applies wherever the item is.
